The private sector added 206,000 jobs in November, outpacing the market consensus, according to Automatic Data Processing's monthly employment report, released this morning.

ADP's National Employment Report figures reflect the largest monthly gain since December 2010, and about twice the average monthly gain since May. The report also revised its October numbers upward, to 130,000 jobs gained, from 110,000.

"This month's jobs figures show positive growth in all major sectors of the economy, and are in line with the recent drop in the national unemployment rate and weekly jobless claims," said Carlos Rodriguez, president and CEO of Roseland-based ADP, in a prepared statement. "Despite fiscal uncertainties here and abroad, owners of small- and medium-sized businesses found ways to grow and hire in November."

Small businesses with less than 50 employees added 110,000 jobs, midsized companies with less than 500 employees added 84,000 and large businesses gained 12,000 jobs.

The private, service-providing sector added 178,000 jobs, while the goods-producing sector added 28,000 jobs; finance gained 7,000 jobs — the first increase in the sector in five months; construction employment grew by 16,000, the most notable gain since November 2006; and manufacturing gained 7,000 jobs, offsetting October's decline.

"November's advance was the largest monthly gain since last December and nearly twice the average monthly gain since May, when employment decelerated sharply," said Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, which produces the monthly report with ADP.
